Case Study: World Record Egg

Remember the World Record Egg back in 2019? The egg that became the most liked picture on Instagram and has held that title ever since? Did you know that breaking the record was part of a campaign? In 2019, an account called @world_record_egg on Instagram posted a photo of an egg, urging people to like the post to help break Kylie Jenner’s record for most liked post on Instagram. It didn’t take long for this egg to become a major part of pop culture at the time. People were really excited about taking part in the breaking of a world record. After the world record was broken, the account started posting photos of the egg starting to crack little by little. The account then announced that they would be revealing what’s inside the egg in a short clip on Hulu that was to be aired immediately following the Super Bowl. It was revealed that the egg was “cracking under the pressure of social media”. The World Record Egg was a campaign for mental health awareness! By creating so much digital buzz, the World Record Egg was able to use its momentum and popularity to fundraise for multiple mental health nonprofits and raise general awareness for mental health. Since the big reveal, the World Record Egg account has continued to post about mental health while maintaining its egg brand. There have been a few opportunities for the egg to reclaim the spotlight, such as at the start of the pandemic when everyone was at home and on their phones more than ever, but it was overall still a very successful campaign.

During the fall 2021 semester, I worked alongside three other classmates to put together a campaign planbook for WAER, which is Syracuse University’s NPR affiliate station. We were tasked with the goal of increasing memberships and converting regular members to sustained members who donate on a monthly basis. During the Fall 2020 semester, myself and three other students were tasked with choosing a client and conducting research through a variety of research methods. We chose to use Syracuse University as our client and we specifically researched the university’s response to the #NotAgainSU crisis that took place in 2019. We targeted students to better understand how they reacted to the school’s crisis communications efforts. This document outlines all the research methods we used and what our findings were.

WAER Membership Campaign

During the fall 2021 semester, I worked alongside three other classmates to put together a campaign planbook for WAER, which is Syracuse University’s NPR affiliate station. We were tasked with the goal of increasing memberships and converting regular members to sustained members who donate on a monthly basis.

The planbook includes our research, a breakdown of our objectives, strategies, and tactics for the campaign, a budget, a GANTT chart to show the timeline of the campaign, and example deliverables that could be used by the client. The campaign we put together would hypothetically be put into place during the Spring 2021 semester and would include things such as sending an e-newsletter, working with alumni on various promotions, social media campaigns, etc.

One of the deliverables we created was a sticker that says “I Support Public Radio” that could be sent to members of WAER as a thank you for the donation. They could also be used to incentivize students to make donations and become members.

Navy blue circular sticker with orange text that says "I support public radio!" with the WAER logo on the bottom.

Another tactic we created was an e-newsletter to be sent to members as well as parents of students in WAER. It includes a QR code to a donation page, a broadcast schedule, and highlights of WAER’s podcasts. The QR code would be especially useful because the number of scans could be tracked which would in turn provide insight into the effectiveness of the newsletter for our goal.

  • Song Analysis Podcast
I created this podcast analyzing the song “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)” for a class at Syracuse University called Reading Popular Culture. I analyzed the lyrics and score of the song to understand how they conveyed different messages and themes. My thesis for this podcast was that by giving her audience a longer version of the song, Taylor Swift has created a piece of content that is even more relatable than it was before, and it ultimately helps her connect with her fans that have experienced a similar unhealthy relationship and/or breakup and help them feel less alone in such a difficult time. The new version of the song also shines light on the issue of men in Hollywood dating women significantly younger than them and how those predatory relationships take shape.

“Six Flags Entertainment Corp. has always been passionate about providing a one-stop-shop location for family fun, and now that the Darien Lake park has joined the Six Flags family, we are excited to provide the same fun for the kids who are treated at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. As a whole, Six Flags clearly loves our DC Comics heroes, but none of them are quite as special as the kids out there fighting the real battles every single day,” said Jim Reid-Anderson, CEO of Six Flags Entertainment Corp.

“We are so grateful for everything that Six Flags Darien Lake is doing for the kids and families at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Their generous contribution will make a huge difference in the lives of the kids, and the day of the event will be one they will never forget,” said Dr. Gregory P. Conners, the executive director of Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.

“As a dance marathon director, I get to see a lot of amazing students do a lot of amazing things to help the kids at their local hospitals. To see this movement now expanding into other realms outside of college campuses is something I never expected to see, but it’s certainly amazing. Six Flags is setting an example that I hope other companies will follow in the future,” said Gaelan McCartney who is the dance marathon director for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

About

Children’s Miracle Network was founded in 1983 to raise money and awareness for the children’s hospitals that provide care for kids all over the United States and Canada. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals provide 32 million treatments yearly, and it aims to relieve the financial burdens not covered by insurance, because the primary focus when you have a child fighting for their life should never be monetary. Miracle Network Dance Marathon is one aspect of Children’s Miracle Network’s fundraising outlets. Students across the country fundraise for their local hospitals by dancing for 12 hours and receiving donations from friends and family.

Six Flags Entertainment Corp. is a one-stop-shop location for all things fun and entertainment. It provides a wide variety of options for kids, teens, adults and families including rides, games, music, food and attractions.

Op-Ed

This is an op-ed written about Greek letter organizations on university campuses. I discussed how Greek life has gotten a bad reputation from the headline stories about the worst of the worst situations, but those are the exceptions. I argue that Greek life is not as bad as it seems and joining it actually has many benefits.

The following information is part of a class assignment at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University, 2019. All information is intended to be sourced appropriately.

  • Case Study: World Record Egg
Remember the World Record Egg back in 2019? The egg that became the most liked picture on Instagram and has held that title ever since? Did you know that breaking the record was part of a campaign? After breaking the world record, the account started posting photos of the egg starting to crack little by little. The account then announced that they would be revealing what’s inside the egg in a short clip on Hulu that was to be aired immediately following the Super Bowl. It turned out that the World Record Egg was a campaign for mental health awareness.
  • WAER Membership Campaign
During the fall 2021 semester, I worked alongside three other classmates to put together a campaign planbook for WAER, which is Syracuse University’s NPR affiliate station. We were tasked with the goal of increasing memberships and converting regular members to sustained members who donate on a monthly basis. The planbook includes our research, a breakdown of our objectives, strategies, and tactics for the campaign, a budget, a GANTT chart to show the timeline of the campaign, and example deliverables that could be used by the client.
